Smashing Magazine: What If Oscars Were Given To Movie Websites?
In this article, web developer Julia May, takes an interesting look at the Oscars and how they are awarded. As a designer myself, I was particularly interested in her question and concept of “What If Oscars Were Given To Movie Websites?”.Well, what if they were? I love movies and web- I think they should be given awards! Sure, I’m biased as a designer, but if you’re here then chances are you also love movies and web- so I’m sure you understand.
Enough talking, let’s get to winners as she saw them…
Category: Graphics
Nominees: Law Abiding Citizen, Transformers, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Alice in Wonderland Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, How to Train Your Dragon and A Town Called Panic.
And the winner is… Alice In Wonderland.
I personally thought that the nominees were weak in this category and would have argued for Avatar. Regardless, Alice In Wonderland did in fact have strong graphics and out of the group they did a far better job at pulling the world created in Tim Burton’s film out of the big screen and onto the small screen (read: Safari on my MacBook).
Category: Interactivity
Nominees: Broken Embraces, Halloween 2, District 9, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
And the winner is… Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
Easy win in this category as the film lent itself very well to games and they took advanctage of that. There are also scenes where the characters are animatd and talk directly to you adding for that much needed level of interactivity for the win.
Category: Dynamic Effects
Nominees: Halloween 2, Where the Wild Things Are, Transformers, Watchmen, Terminator Salvation, Lovely Bones and Star Trek.
And the winner is… Star Trek.
Yeah, I would have to agree here. The effects on this site and the way they walk you through the ship amazing. You have to try for yourself as there are sections where images appear all around you as you navigate through the site. I almost forgot it was a website and started reaching for my wii remote!
Category: Harmony With Movie
Nominees: Alice in Wonderland, Star Trek, Drag Me to Hell, Surrogates, Up in the Air and District 9.
And the winner is… District 9.
A well deserved victory for District 9. The website for this movie really gives you an excellent idea as to what you can expect from the film. District 9 is the story of aliens forced to live within a camp policed by the U.S Military and the website serves as a news source where you can find maps and updates as if we actually lived in that world. There were other sites built for the movie such as D-9.com, but you will have to check those out for yourself.
Category: Best Exclusive Content
Nominees: Alice in Wonderland, Nine, An Education, Up in the Air, Watchmen and The Wolfman.
And the winner is… The Wolfman.
Although I didn’t care for The Wolfman, I was intrigued by their content online so I would have to agree here as well.
Category: Typography
Nominees: Halloween 2, Watchmen, Nine, How to Train Your Dragon, Inglorious Basterds, Where the Wild Things Are and Broken Embraces.
And the winner is… Inglorious Basterds.
I strongly disagree here and thought that Halloween 2 should have won for best typography. It’s actually one that caught my eye when first trailer was released. There is something very appealing about the minimalist design and subtle grunge textures on the type that makes it so much better than the rest.
Category: Fun Games
Nominees: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Transformers, Sherlock Holmes, Surrogates, District 9, How to Train Your Dragon and Avatar.
And the winner is… How to Train Your Dragon.
I didn’t bother playing so sure why not… the kids really loved this one.
Category: Cross-Media Interactins
Nominees: Alice in Wonderland, Star Trek, Pandorum, District 9, Avatar and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
And the winner is… The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
I’m going to be a little hard here and say that I don’t agree. Actually, I don’t know who I would select as the winner here as I strongly feel that this is one area that all films could stand to improve in.
Category: Best HTML Website
Nominees: The Cove, Music by Prudence, Food Inc. and When You’re Strange.
And the winner is… Music by Prudence.
Although Music by Prudence was good, I enjoyed The Cove the most.
Category: Best Flash Website
Nominees: Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, Inglorious Basterds, Lovely Bones, Surrogates and Up in the Air.
And the winner is… Inglourious Basterds.
Definitely a winner here. There was so many categories at the Oscars as well as here on these fake web Oscars that I would have liked to see Inglourious Basterds take home.
Honorable Mention
City Island, Mid-August Lunch, Invictus, The Hurt Locker, Green Zone, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Square, Kick-Ass, Shutter Island, Brooklyn’s Finest, The Road, Hot Tub Time Machine, Moon, Lbs., The Secret in Their Eyes, Precious, Valentine’s Day and Please Give.
Take a look around at these websites. Which one’s did you think should have won an Oscar? Or which category do you think would be good have created?
